MAiD Mentors
CAMAP Mentors are MAiD providers with broad experience in the issues facing providers and assessors related to the practice of MAiD. They are also familiar with the resources available in their province for physician and nurse practitioner colleagues facing work-life balance issues.
CAMAP Mentors are available to give advice to other providers and assessors in their province, especially those new to MAiD, who may be experiencing some of the following problems:
- General MAiD eligibility issues
- Uncertainty over provincial administrative arrangements concerning MAiD
- Uncertainty around provincial and federal reporting requirements
- Professional relationship issues (conscientious objector colleagues, professional isolation, facilities prohibiting MAiD, etc)
- Work-life balance issues and burnout
MAiD Consultants
CAMAP MAiD Consultants are providers with a great deal of experience (at least 30 MAiD procedures completed) who are able to assist providers and assessors with concerns about complex patient eligibility issues. Whilst the province in which each consultant practices is listed, CAMAP members may contact any of the CAMAP MAiD consultants for advice.
The CAMAP MAiD Consultant service complements the CAMAP Provider and Assessor forums available online by allowing providers and assessors who do not wish or are unable to use the forums to seek advice.
MAiD Capacity and Mental Health Consultants
CAMAP MAiD Consultants (Capacity and Mental Health) are consultant psychiatrists who are also MAiD providers or assessors. They have expertise in the assessment of capacity for MAiD in patients with mental health conditions or cognitive impairment and are able to assist providers and assessors with concerns about complex patient eligibility issues in these situations.
For example, the mental health condition might be the main reason for the patient seeking MAiD (in the presence of co-morbidities which make natural death reasonably foreseeable), a co-morbidity contributing to intolerable suffering, or a condition which makes capacity uncertain.
The irreversibility of the mental health conditions might also be unclear. Progressive cognitive impairment is very common in older people, especially those at the end of life with many co-morbidities and medications. Cognitive functioning might also be transiently imparied after surgery or treatment of an infection, during which decisions might change over time.
